The practical guide

UTM parameters, without the mystery.

A consistent naming system turns campaign data into something your whole team can trust.

UTM parameters are short labels added to the end of a web address. When someone clicks that address, analytics software such as Google Analytics can use the labels to explain where the visit came from and which campaign drove it. The destination page stays the same; the extra information simply makes attribution more useful. A UTM builder handles the formatting and URL encoding so you do not have to assemble the query string by hand.

Five standard fields cover most campaign reporting. Campaign source, or utm_source, names the platform, publisher, list, or partner that sent the visitor. Typical values include google, linkedin, or newsletter. Campaign medium, or utm_medium, describes the broad channel, such as cpc, social, email, or qr. Together, source and medium answer “where did this person come from?” in a reusable way.

Campaign name, or utm_campaign, groups related activity under one initiative. A launch might use summer_product_launch across several ad networks and emails. Keeping the same campaign name lets you compare those channels as one coordinated effort. Choose a name that will still make sense months later; internal codes can work, but plain descriptive language usually makes reports easier to scan.

The optional fields add detail. utm_term was designed for paid-search keywords and is still useful for recording a keyword, targeting theme, or audience segment. utm_content distinguishes variations within otherwise identical campaigns. Use it for values such as hero_button, video_a, or footer_link. If two links share a source, medium, and campaign but use different creative or placements, content is usually the right field.

Consistency matters more than cleverness. Analytics tools treat Facebook and facebook as different values, which splits reporting. Lowercase values avoid that problem. Spaces can be encoded safely, but underscores are easier to read, copy, and standardize, so spring_sale is often better than Spring Sale. UTMFast enables lowercase and underscore formatting by default while still letting you turn it off when an existing convention requires exact casing.

Write down a small naming convention before a team launches campaigns. Decide whether paid social uses paid_social or cpc, how campaign dates are represented, and which field records creative variants. Avoid personal data in UTM values because URLs can appear in browser history, analytics reports, and shared messages. Also avoid changing names halfway through a campaign unless you deliberately want separate reporting.

UTM tags do not create tracking on their own and do not reveal personal identities. They label incoming links so an analytics setup can categorize traffic. Test every finished URL before publishing it, especially when the base URL already contains query parameters or a fragment. This builder preserves existing parameters, encodes new values correctly, and updates each UTM key rather than duplicating it.

For repeated work, use presets as a starting point and then tailor them to your reporting model. The Google UTM builder preset uses google and cpc, making it a quick starting point for a UTM builder for Google Ads. The LinkedIn UTM builder preset supports consistent paid or organic social naming. Because every value remains editable, the same interface works as a custom UTM builder for partners, print, newsletters, and internal campaign conventions.

A GA4 UTM builder does not require a separate format: GA4 recognizes the same standard campaign parameters described above. What matters is choosing stable values and applying them consistently. Bulk mode is useful when one campaign points to several landing pages or when a spreadsheet already contains per-row values. Your finished links and recent history stay in this browser; UTMFast has no backend to receive them. That makes the tool fast and private, but it also means clearing browser site data removes the saved history, so download a CSV when you need a durable team archive.

FAQ

Common UTM questions

What is a UTM builder?

A UTM builder adds standard campaign parameters to a destination URL. Analytics tools can then attribute visits and conversions to the source, medium, campaign, term, and content you chose.

Is this UTM builder free?

Yes. UTMFast is genuinely free, with no link limits, trials, subscriptions, or locked features.

Do I need to sign up?

No. There is no account or email gate. The builder runs entirely in your browser.

Does this save my links?

Yes. Valid links are saved in persistent local browser storage on this device, capped at about 100 recent entries. They remain after refreshes and browser restarts until you delete them or clear site data.

utm_term vs utm_content — what is the difference?

utm_term usually identifies a paid-search keyword or audience term. utm_content distinguishes creative variants, placements, links, or calls to action within the same campaign.

Can I generate UTM links in bulk?

Yes. Paste one base URL per line to apply shared values, or paste CSV data with url, source, medium, campaign, term, and content columns. You can copy every result or download a CSV.

Can I use UTMFast for Google Ads, GA4, and LinkedIn?

Yes. Use the Google UTM builder preset for Google Ads, keep the standard parameters for GA4 reporting, or choose the LinkedIn preset for social campaigns. Every field remains editable.
